Terriers strong in weekend sweep

6-1. The score of Red Sox-Yankees score today? No. 6-1. The odds of the Arizona Cardinals pulling off the upset against the reigning Super Bowl champs? No. (Try 600-1). 6-1 is the record of the red-hot Boston University women’s soccer team.

After winning two matches this weekend, the first Friday night at Fairfield University, 1-0, and the second Sunday against Brown University, 2-1, at Nickerson Field, the Terriers have compiled a record unseen by Boston University fans in almost 10 years.

On Friday, coming off their only loss of the season to the University of Michigan, the Terriers came out firing against Fairfield (1-6).

Outshooting the Stags 13-1 in the first half, the Terriers netted the only goal needed for the victory at the 17-minute mark.

Junior Meghann Cook, the Terriers scoring leader, took a cross from freshman Alexandra Riccomini, and blasted an uncontested, 25-yard shot into the high left corner of the Stag net.

“[Cook's] a creative attacker, she’s a fantastic player and getting goals gives you confidence,” said BU coach Nancy Feldman. “She’s playing with a lot of confidence right now.”

BU had several chances to pad its lead in the first half, but it could not solve Stag freshman goalie Brett Maron. Freshman Nicole Lucey offered the first try after Cook’s goal, deflecting a corner kick off her head, only to be denied by Maron. Then, junior Melissa Shulman laid a pass for Cook, who rocketed a low shot, but Maron made a dive to record another stop.

Fairfield showed some signs of life on offense in the second half, firing eight shots on net, only to be outdone by BU’s 11.

The only legitimate Stag chance came late in the half, as Megan King took a pass in the Terrier box, but BU freshman goalie Christina Reuter cut it off, forcing the shot wide.

Fairfield fired two more shots in the next two minutes, only to see them sail wide as well.

Sophomore Stephanie Dreyer played the first half, which has been the norm for the Terriers, and earned the win with two saves.

Dreyer and Reuter contributed to the Stags’ offensive woes by recording their third combined shutout of the season. Fairfield has scored only three goals in seven games.

Feldman said she thought the two goalies should continue to share time, mainly because they both deserve to.

“Do you have a thought of who’s outplaying who? I don’t see it,” Feldman said. “They’re both doing a good job, like they have been in training, the kids dictate who plays, and until someone takes charge by stepping up over the other one, I don’t see any reason to change what we’re doing.”

Sunday afternoon, the offense needed a little more time to come to life.

In a grudge match against the Bears (3-3-0), neither team showed any signs of life on offense until a minute remained in the first half.

On a free kick from the Brown corner, the ball deflected off several players until junior Susan Marschall drove it home on an uncontested shot just outside of the box. The goal was Marschall’s second on the season. Shulman was credited with the assist.

“We had a couple good chances, but I thought that we could have been quicker to the ball,” Feldman said. “We weren’t dominating by any stretch of the imagination at that point in the game.”

The Terriers entered the break outshooting the Bears six to four. However, BU showed Brown why it was once the No. 22 team in the nation, firing shots immediately and playing lights-out defense.

“I thought we came out really well in the second half,” Feldman said. “And even in the next 35 minutes we were really dominant.”

Just 7:21 into the second half, Shulman netted what turned out to be the game-winner, her third goal of the season.

Collecting a pass from Cook, the junior fired a shot several yards out of the box. Bear goalie Hilary Wilson deflected the shot but couldn’t contain it, as it bounced off her hands into the right corner of the net.

“It’s good to see Melissa Shulman get that goal. She’s had a monkey on her back,” Feldman said. “She takes it personally when she doesn’t score. She’s getting a lot of confidence, and that’s fantastic.

“We knew that the next goal, the second one, would be the most important one,” Shulman said.

However, like many other games this season, the Terriers couldn’t shut the door on their opponent, slowing down in the late stages.

With just a minute and a half remaining, Brown junior Jill Mansfield collected a pass inside the Terrier box and directed a shot over Reuter to pull the Bears within a goal.

But that would be as close as the Bears would get, as the Terrier defense shut down Brown for the rest of the match.
