With reports surfacing Monday night that the Red Sox have a tentative trade in place to land Florida Marlins starting pitcher Josh Beckett, the state of the team is up for debate. After the team tied for the best record in the American League East this season and earned its third straight playoff berth, some say that the best thing to do is reload with high-priced talent and make another run at the World Series title the Sox captured in 2004.

The announcement by General Motors that it will cut 30,000 jobs and close some factories in an effort to reverse its downshifting revenue shows that the U.S. auto industry, perhaps out of stubbornness and a refusal to change its tradition of auto-making, is being seriously outperformed by overseas competitors.

Women’s health center officially boasts BU name

After 12 years of existence at Boston University, the Women’s Health Interdisciplinary Research Program recently became an official center within the university. The first WHIRC symposium featured “Emerging Issues in Research on Women’s Health” and was held at the BU Medical Center Monday to raise awareness about the organization.
