Barrett Wolf grabbed a win at No. 1 singles and led his team to its fifth win in six tries yesterday. Lorenzo DurantiniThe Boston University men’s tennis team disposed of the University of Rhode Island today, 6-1. The Terriers (10-3) used a balanced attack of doubles and singles to win their fifth match in their last six tries.
“Everyone had a pretty good day,” said coach Rocky Jarvis. “They played us pretty tough, but we fought hard and got the victory.”
BU won the doubles point over the Rams (7-9) even though the No. 1 team of junior Barrett Wolf and sophomore Jared Kobren lost for the first time this season.
“We didn’t really have a chance to practice together this week because of [College of General Studies] finals,” Wolf said. “We didn’t play our best, but we’ll be ready for this weekend. It was a reality check.”
Wolf was also involved in an interesting singles match, as he squared off against the URI No. 1 player. Wolf fell behind, 1-5, to start the first set. He then reeled off nine straight game wins before his opponent retired.
“The kid I played against was a complete head case,” Wolf said. “He was questioning all my calls, trying to get into my head, but in the end I guess I got into his head because he quit.”
“It was an interesting match that had some back and forth chatter,” Jarvis said. “Barrett plays with a lot of fire and after listening to some advice [he] started to succeed. It was a hard and tough match to get.”
At the second singles, Kobren came back and won his match, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3. At third singles, freshman Miron Nissim fell, 7-5, 6-3. Nissim had just moved up to third singles after finishing 4-0 last week and being named America East Player of the Week.
“Miron played a huge hitter that went for big shots and hit them,” Jarvis said. “It’s nice to see him up in third position and get Player of the Week last week.”
Junior Ross Lohr won his singles match, 6-2, 6-3, and fifth singles player Giulio Gallarotti won, 6-3, 6-2.
Sophomore Hans Sapra scored the clinching point for the Terriers with a 2-6, 6-1, 6-3 win. It was the first time in his career that Sapra scored the match-clinching point.
“I felt as if I could have played much better, especially in the first set,” Sapra said. “Coach Jarvis really helped me keep my head in the game so that I could help the team by pulling out the win.”
“Hans has the skills to get it done on this team,” Jarvis said. “He just needed confidence. The guys were really happy for him.”
The Terriers next set their sights on Stony Brook University this Saturday. Coach Jarvis said the team has a pretty tough schedule coming up in the next few weeks, including a date with Boston College on April 9.
“I’ve had my eyes on that match in the schedule the whole season,” Wolf said. “There would be nothing better then for us then to end the season with a win over our rivals. We’re looking forward to taking them out.”
