Education sec. pushes new 5-point plan
U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings outlined her plans to improve the nation’s higher education system yesterday at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. Spellings’s plans, based on a Commission on the Future of Higher Education report that calls for improved accessibility, affordability and accountability of higher education institutions, include toned-down language that was altered after critics complained in June that the database suggested in Spellings’s preliminary plan was an invasion of privacy.
Bicytaxis promote credit card, Facebook group
As part of a new promotion strategy by Chase — one of the country’s largest consumer banks — 10 Bicytaxis have travelled up and down Boston University’s stretch of Commonwealth Avenue and neighboring streets since Tuesday, offering rides to students who can produce a BU ID.
Palestinian Ambassador talks democracy, Hamas politics
Palestine is looking for a win-win, and Israel is looking for win-lose, Afif Safieh, Palestinian Ambassador to the United States, told the audience at a WorldBoston Luncheon Wednesday, adding “We should all encourage win-win.” At the luncheon, sponsored by WorldBoston — a non-profit, non-partisan group — Safieh addressed members of the organization and the general public on issues ranging from Israeli-Palestinian relations to the role of the Middle East in global affairs.
Councilors fight plan to dim Citgo
Boston City Council members blasted Jerry McDermott (Allston, Brighton) yesterday over his proposal to take down Kenmore Square’s Citgo sign — one of Boston’s most famous landmarks — and examined whether the issue should ever be discussed in council meetings.
