BEYONCE: B’Day
Beyonce has been R’B's black Barbie for the past seven years, but with the debut of her second solo CD, B’Day, her perfect plastic image has begun to melt into something a little hotter, sharper and messier. “Deja Vu,” the first single off of B’Day, marks the beginning of her metamorphosis.
JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE: FutureSex/LoveSounds
Is Justin Timberlake the new prince of pop or R’B? On his latest album, the unfortunately titled FutureSex/LoveSounds, JT ambitiously reaches for both crowns. Drawing from a number of influences ranging from producer Timbaland to Prince (evident in the electro-funkiness of “Sexy Girls”), Timberlake assembles a solid album of danceable pop hits, sure to be blasting from radio and club speakers with the same frequency as the overplayed “SexyBack.
YO LA TENGO: I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass
Yo La Tengo wants you to rock with their latest release, I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass. While the album lacks a definite genre, that hasn’t stopped Ira Kaplan, Georgia Hubley and James McNew from creating another flawless record. The trio once again proves its staying power by recreating a unique sound that has matured over two decades and 15 full-length albums.
Trouble in paradise
Three chances. Haven director Frank E. Flowers had three solid opportunities to make his Cayman Islands-set crime drama interesting. In Haven, the Cayman-born director tells three intertwined stories that expose a less attractive side of paradise. The first plotline tells the typical story of a love affair between the son of a fisherman, Shy (Orlando Bloom), and a rich girl, Andrea (Zoe Saldana).
Pirates praise the pasta deity
Freethinkers and heretics, rejoice! Pastafarianism, humor’s response to the intelligent design debate, now has an official holy book. With The Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, founder Bobby Henderson presents full details of his religion, which credits a divine conglomeration of pasta as the Creator of the universe, identifies pirates as His Noodliness’s Chosen People and offers devotees an afterlife with a beer volcano and a stripper factory.
