Patrick Sworn In as First Black Governor of Massachusetts

Following his inauguration ceremony yesterday, Democrat Deval Patrick officially assumed the Massachusetts State House’s corner office, ending a 16-year succession of Republican governors. Senate President Robert E. Travaglini and House Speaker Salvatore DiMasi joined thousands of supporters outside the State House to watch as Patrick and Lt. Gov. Tim Murray were sworn in. Instead of holding the ceremony indoors as is tradition, Patrick chose to hold it on the Boston Common across from the State House steps. var uslide_show_id = “0c5fbca2-96d5-448f-9b07-506c3b47d462″;var slideshowwidth = “468″;var linktext = “Slideshow: Inauguration Ceremony on the Boston Common”;

Mass. Legislature Advances Gay Marriage Referendum

After two recesses in the past six months and a highly publicized plea to vote from outgoing Gov. Mitt Romney, the Massachusetts Legislature voted yesterday to advance a referendum on a constitutional amendment that would appear on the 2008 ballot to ban gay marriage in the state. After taking two separate votes in the Legislature, 62 votes were tallied in favor of advancing the initiative, 12 more than the 50 votes necessary to keep the possibility of an amendment alive. The Legislature will vote again on the issue next year, and if it passes for a second time, Massachusetts voters will have a chance to decide whether or not gay marriage should remain legal in the commonwealth.

The Terriers (3-8) never overcame their ice-cold start, shooting only seven-of-29 in the first half. And while they performed better offensively in the second half (13-of-27, 35 points), it simply was not enough.
