European consuls general discuss Turkey’s shortcomings for joining EU
Seven European consuls general discussed why Turkey is not qualified to enter the European Union for political and social reasons last night at the Boston University Photonics Center. “Turkey has done a lot to adjust, but there is still a lot to be done,” said Wolfgang Vorwerk, the consul general of the Federal Republic of Germany in Boston, adding Turkey must act alone to meet the EU standards of democracy and human rights before it is considered for acceptance.
Lawmakers reconsider preparations for avian flu outbreak
After failing to pass a bill aimed at preparing Massachusetts for a potential avian flu pandemic last legislative session, Massachusetts lawmakers reintroduced the bill yesterday at the State House. The bill, sponsored by Sen. Richard Moore (D-Uxbridge), would allocate $36.
Mass. transit agencies to face $20 billion debt
Massachusetts’s transportation system’s debt is projected to reach $20 billion over the next 20 years because of a history of budget neglect for adequate maintenance, according to a report released by the Massachusetts Transportation Finance Commission yesterday.
BU aid rate falls behind rising costs
Boston University students with merit- and need-based scholarships may not be guaranteed the same funds next year as the total cost to attend the school rises at a rate faster than the university’s budget for financial aid, officials said. The Financial Assistance Office will increase its budget by 3 percent to $225 million next year, trailing the 4.
