LETTER: Shooter needed counseling

n In reaction to the Virginia Tech shootings, different advocacy groups are focusing on gun control and security as issues that should be addressed after this latest tragedy. While these are valid points, doesn’t the problem stem from mental-heath care? It is nearly impossible to get individuals into mental-health facilities after they turn 18 unless they commit themselves or have committed some act of violence against themselves or others.

LETTER: BU must be responsive

n In light of recent events, I am very disappointed in the administration’s lack of a response to its students. Boston University prides itself on being a close-knit community despite its large size, a community in which each person is fully supported. However, this is not being expressed.

PERSPECTIVE: A begrudging but inevitable step toward ‘The Real World’

As May 20 nears the corner and my bittersweet feelings about leaving the place I have known as home for the past four years surface, I have come to the realization that I have absolutely no idea which direction my life will take me after graduation. Now, as I think about my rapidly changing career choices — from actress to photographer to psychologist, and now aspiring fashion journalist — I realize the job market for any of these is not very promising.

PERSPECTIVE: Phone, dreams are washed away in an untimely tide

It’s 9:33 p.m. in Boston, a perfect time to sit down and start writing a paper due tomorrow morning. The Warren Towers computer lab seems to be a place where I get a sufficient amount of work done, so this is where I am. I haven’t started the paper and have been on Postsecret.

POITRAS: The Oedipus complex: A maternal affair

I don’t care how many people think Freud is a genius — I do not want to have sex with my mom. It’s my mom, for God’s sake. Do you have any idea how gross that sounds? I know about this Oedipus complex brouhaha, and just because one Greek dude gave it to his mom a few thousand years ago doesn’t mean all dudes want to sleep with the woman who brought them into this world.
