MURPHY: An orange-and-black celebration on the Emerald Isle

There I was, sitting on the bus, riding down the dark, wet street after a long, unpaid day in Internshipville, when something other than remnants from my neighbor’s cough hovered over me: Halloween was near.

After Congress failed to pass a comprehensive immigration reform legislation package in June, the Dream Act seemed to some legislators to be one last chance to change immigration policy this year. However, without the enforcement and reform combination of the defeated legislation package, the Act was an insufficient bill and rightly defeated by the Senate last week.

While Massachusetts legislators have rightly decided women must have safe access to reproductive health clinics, a bill passed last week by the Senate that would effectively prevent anti-abortion protesters from demonstrating within 35 feet of any clinics unduly restricts the First Amendment right protesters have to freedom of expression in a public forum.

Sometimes I wish I were a coddled 3-year-old again, wrapped in a blanket like a big burrito ready to be consumed by Mr. Sandman. Law school has a remarkable ability to drain your batteries — enough so that I realized Friday night I was feeling really cranky because I had skipped a mid-afternoon siesta.
