For some, Life Sciences bill a cure-all to foster research, preserve economy

Gov. Deval Patrick’s Life Sciences Initiative will put $1 billion over the next 10 years into life science research to push Massachusetts ahead in biotechnology, create jobs and keep researchers in the state, a move some say is necessary to keep the Bay State at the forefront of research and revitalize a struggling industry.

Legislators look to rising endowments

Some Massachusetts lawmakers are looking for a way to put nonprofit universities with soaring endowments on the state tax roll, joining Congress in taking a hard look at spending at the richest colleges, including Boston University, which holds a $1.1 billion endowment.
