Crowding the podium

The Boston University men’s and women’s track teams represented Terrier Nation this past weekend in the Connecticut Spring Invitational at the George Sherman Family Sports Complex. Individual Terriers took titles in their respective events, earned personal bests and earned spots in the NCAA Regionals, as well as the New England Championships.

The Terrier women set a school record in the 4-by-100meter relay with a time of 46.23 seconds, besting the previous mark set just last season. The Terriers’ time earned them a second place finish – falling short of the University of Connecticut by just .36 seconds.

The standout individual for the Terriers on Saturday was senior jumper Tahari James. James claimed first place in the triple jump for the third week in a row, leaping 13.42 meters. James has already earned a spot in the NCAA Regionals for the triple jump, as well as for the long jump. Junior Whitney Ford also claimed an NCAA Regional spot for her season-best leap of 12.34 meters in the triple jump.

But upperclassmen did not steal all of the glory. In her first 400-meter hurdles start of the year, freshman Jackie Dim took home the victory with a time of 1 minute, 4.41 seconds. Freshman Shelby Watson also had success, pulling off a fourth place finish in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.00 seconds.’

The men’s team finished second overall with a total of 46 points ‘- losing only to the University of Connecticut. Junior Jan Bicanic was a leading contributor to the point total, winning the discus with a season-best throw of 49.40 meters – he also finished second in the shot put (15.53 meters). Sophomore Dan Withrow finished second to Bicanic in the discus with a throw of 48.10 meters.’

Junior Mac-Alen Gerard was awarded an invitation to the New England Championships after he posted a season best distance of 13.95 meters in the triple jump to earn himself this spot.

While field events carried the day for the Terriers, the track events were less productive for BU’s score. There were a few bright spots, but no BU male could break past second place. Sophomore Joel Senick placed second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 48.87 seconds. In the 800-meter run, senior Chadd Steinhauser finished second with a time of 1:52.42. The men’s 4-by-100-meter relay grabbed second place with a time of 43.79 seconds.

BU freshman Balint Horvath finished third in the 1,500-meter run, holding the fastest time (3:58.77) for a member of a college team. Only .01 seconds behind him was his sophomore teammate Ken Haltom (3:58.78). The pair finished behind Mike Rutt and Brian Gagnon, who ran unattached to any schools.

Other notable finishes came from a pair of hurdlers, senior Jason Nardella and junior Mark Mazzochette. Nardella finished fourth overall in the 110-meter hurdles in 15.77 seconds, and Mazzochette took the second spot in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 56.67 seconds. Junior Kodjo Wilder took the fourth overall spot in the long jump with a distance of 6.84 meters.
