Trio of Terriers selected in NHL Draft

Incoming freshman Alex Chiasson headlined a group of three Boston University men’s hockey players selected Saturday on the second day of the 2009 National Hockey League Entry Draft.

The 6-foot-3 forward was drafted in the second round (38th overall) by the Dallas Stars.

Returning sophomore goaltender Kieran Millan and incoming freshman forward Wade Megan were taken in the fifth round. Millan went 124th overall to the Colorado Avalanche, and the Florida Panthers chose Megan with the 138th pick.

Chiasson was named to the United States Hockey League All-Rookie Team this past season after leading the Des Moines Buccaneers with 50 points (17 goals, 33 assists). The St. Augustin, Quebec, native was the sixth collegiate forward selected and is the first BU player drafted by the Stars since Scott Perry in 1998.

The Avalanche continued to add to their newfound reputation as ‘BU West’ with the selection of Millan. The 2009 Hockey Commissioners Association National Rookie of the Year was the 10th goalie drafted, and second among collegians.

Millan becomes the fourth member of last year’s national championship team to be drafted by Colorado, joining graduated forward Brandon Yip and returning junior defensemen Colby Cohen and Kevin Shattenkirk.

In addition, Joe Sacco, the Avalanche’s head coach, and David Quinn, the head coach of Colorado’s American Hockey League affiliate, the Lake Erie Monsters, are BU alumni. The Avalanche and their predecessor, the Quebec Nordiques, have drafted 12 Terriers, more than any other NHL franchise.

Megan was named to the New England Prep School Ice Hockey Association Prep-West First Team this past season after notching 27 goals and 36 assists for 63 points at South Kent School. The Canton, N.Y., native is the second Terrier drafted by the Panthers.
