Powers will be new men’s hockey assistant coach

Boston University alumnus Buddy Powers has been named the new assistant coach of the men’s hockey team, according to the U.S. Hockey Report.

As The Daily Free Press first reported on June 22, current assistant coach Mike Bavis will be promoted to the associate head coach position vacated by David Quinn.

Powers was a forward for the Terriers from 1972-1975, recording 14 goals and 26 assists for 40 points during that span. He has most recently served as the Ice Arena Director at Bowling Green State University and play-by-play commentator for the Falcons’ men’s hockey games on Buckeye Cable Sports Network.

After graduating from BU, Powers played professionally in Europe for five years before accepting an assistant coach position at Colgate University in 1980. In 1982, he left Colgate to become an assistant coach at Bowling Green, where he served under current Boston College head coach Jerry York for six seasons.

In 1988, Powers became the head coach of then-Division-III Rochester Institute of Technology. He led the Tigers to a 26-8-2 record, the ECAC West Championship and the D-III national championship game, losing to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

After one season at RIT, Powers became a D-I head coach when he bolted for Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. In five seasons at the helm, he led the Engineers to a 94-63-13 record. In 1994, Powers took RPI to its first NCAA Tournament since 1985.

Following that season, Powers returned to Bowling Green to replace his former mentor after York moved to BC. Powers’ tenure with the Falcons started off strong, as he compiled a 51-25-3 record in his first two seasons. He was named the Central Collegiate Hockey Association’s Coach of the Year in 1995 after leading Bowling Green to a second-place finish, the program’s best finish in eight years.

But from 1996-2002, the Falcons went 84-124-23. Powers was fired after the 2001-02 season, at which time he joined the USA Hockey National Team Development Program. He served as an assistant coach for the USNTDP for the 2002-03 season.
