Oil spill backs up Comm. Ave. traffic

An oil spill backed up traffic on Commonwealth Avenue near the Boston University Bridge during rush hour Thursday, Boston Police Department officials said.

Boston Hazmat officials responded to a fuel truck that had experienced an oil leak Thursday afternoon, creating an oil slick that extended from the 900 block of Commonwealth Avenue to the Boston University Bridge, BPD spokesman David Estrada said. The right inbound lane was temporarily shut down while crews worked on the spill.

The oil spill was ruled an accident, Estrada said. City of Boston Public Works, the Department of Environmental Protection and the Massachusetts Highway Department assisted the Hazmat team in cleaning up the oil, Estrada said.

No one has been cited for the spill, Estrada said.
