Swimming breaks records at Terrier Invitational

The annual Terrier Invitational, hosted at the Fitness and Recreation Center’s Competition Pool, Nov. 19 to 22, featured dominant performances by its namesake ‘-‘- both the Boston University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams broke records on the way to respective first place finishes.

Both teams won by considerable margins, as the women finished 40 points ahead of Yale University, and the men won by 146 points over Boston College.

The men’s team jumped out to an early lead on Friday, thanks to victories by senior Arik Seiler, who finished with a one minute and fifty-four seconds time in the 200-yard individual medley, and sophomore Daniel Kempf, who finished at 20.60 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle. The Terriers touched first in the 400-yard medley relay as well with a time of 3:23.10.

BU maintained its lead on the second day, helped by the strong efforts from juniors Kyle Ernst, Bryon Kallert and Matt Rickett. The trio, along with sophomore Jackson Hill, won the 200-yard medley with a winning time of 1:31.29.

Rickett and Kempf went one-two in the finals of the 100-yard butterfly, as the duo clocked in at 49.19 and 49.93 seconds, respectively. Ernst followed with a victory in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 56.56 and Kallert repeated with a win in the 100-yard backstroke with a 50.32 time.

The men’s team concluded the weekend with Ernst breaking a school record in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:02.75, a top-20 time in the nation. Kallert continued his winning ways on top of the 200-yard backstroke, clocking in at 1:49.09.

Kempf and Jackson cruised to a one-two finish in the 100-yard freestyle with times of 45.38 and 45.39, respectively. The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Kempf, Rickett, Kallert and Hill closed out the invitational with a win, touching the wall in 3:02.95.

The women’s team opened the tournament in impressive fashion as well, breaking records and coasting to an early lead in the event. Junior Maria McIntyre claimed first in the 50-yard freestyle in just 23.0 seconds, not only breaking the school record but also resetting the America East mark, while reaching a top-10 time in the nation.’

Sophomore Amanda Schmitz clocked in at 4:56.34 in the 500-yard freestyle, breaking the school record. BU also broke school records in the 200-yard freestyle relay and 400-yard medley relay.

The second day of the Terrier Invitational saw the BU women maintain their advantage with another record-breaking performance from Schmitz.’ This time Schmitz broke the record in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:20.31. Senior Emily Munday broke her previous school-record in the 100-yard fly with a time of 54.57, but placed second.

On the final day of the event, senior Brigette O’Shaughnessy broke the school in the 1,650-yard free when she clocked in at 16:56.72. Schmitz capped off her incredible weekend by breaking her own mark in the 200-yard fly, with a time of 2:01.56. The women broke seven records over the weekend.
