LETTER: 'Send Word' not the problem

The problem isn’t that Send Word Now is being used too often, but rather, that when it is being used, too many text messages, emails and phone calls are being sent.

Letting students know that SMG classes are canceled until 2 p.m. is valid. Sending a CAS student four texts, four emails and two phone calls is not.

I did not need to be contacted 10 times. When I received the first phone call and pressed “1′ to accept, the system should have recognized I had heard the news and stopped contacting me.

We are not, at the moment, at risk of students ignoring the message. Reading a simple text to find out the news isn’t difficult. Most students would easily recognize and avoid a text about gunmen, unless we are receiving multiple messages per week.
