The Boston University women’s swimming and diving team claimed its second-straight America East championship in a row Sunday. The Terriers finished the four-day tournament with 765 points, 84 points more than second-place University of Maryland-Baltimore County, for their first repeat in 15 years.The University of New Hampshire took third, and the University of Vermont finished fourth.
“It is extremely special,” said BU coach Bill Smyth to BU Athletics. “I feel privileged to coach such a great group of young ladies and watch their daily commitment turn into this wonderful result. They earned every step of the way, I’m really proud of them. The thing that stands out most is the unity and the carrying that the ladies showed for each other. They were a true team this weekend.”
Several school records were broken by the Terriers during the AE Championship. Senior Brigette O’Shaughnessy ended her collegiate career with a bang, finishing with a time of 16:56.26 in the 1650-meter freestyle. Sophomore Amanda Schmitz broke the 200-meter butterfly school record with a time of 2:01.42. The Terriers’ 400-meter freestyle relay, comprised of senior Emily Munday, junior Kristen Tullis, freshman Lauren Drake and junior Maria McIntyre, ended the tournament on a high note, setting both a school and AE record with a time of 3:23.53.
Freshman diving phenom Melinda Matyas was named Diver of the Meet, grabbing first in both diving events.
