W. basketball knocks off Maine on the road

MATT GOLDBERG/ Daily Free Press Staff

The Boston University women’s basketball team traveled up north in the snow to defeat University of Maine by a score of 71-59 at Alfond Arena, despite an impressive comeback effort in the second half by the Black Bears.

The Terriers (13-9, 10-0 America East) have beaten the Black Bears (6-15, 3-6 AE) in both meetings this year. The win is the 10th consecutive for the Terriers, who sit atop America East with an undefeated conference record.

BU began the game on fire, jumping out to a 12-0 lead in the first 4:07 of the game. Things only got better from there, as the Terriers went on a 20-3 run to move even further ahead with 9:34 remaining in the first half.

The Black Bears began to fight back as the half wore on, and went on a 15-4 run to bring the score to 36-21 in the final three minutes of the half. The score was 40-23 in favor of the Terriers at the half.

Maine’s comeback efforts did not end in the first. They continued to claw their way back into the game until the BU lead was just three points with 5:48 remaining in the game. But the Terriers regained their advantage before the gap could be closed and pulled away to close out the game and get the win, despite being outscored in the second half.

Sophomore guard Chantell Alford scored a game-high 28 points for the Terriers, 15 of which came from behind the three-point line. Alford earned her second consecutive America East Player of the Game honor, and scored more than 20 points for the fifth time this season.

Also hot from beyond the arc was junior guard Alex Young, who scored 22 points, 18 of which were from long distance. The Terriers hit 12 three-pointers in the game, their highest total of the year.

Sophomore guard Mo Moran was also a strong contributor, scoring eight points and distributing nine assists in the game. Moran has been a key player for the Terriers as of late, playing almost every minute of every game.

No one was better on the boards than senior center Kerry Cashman, who totaled 13 rebounds and six points. The tri-captain finished the game with eight offensive rebounds.

The five starters for BU did not come off the court much, each playing more than 34 minutes. The bench, which has played a key role in recent games, only scored a combined total of two points and five rebounds in 20 minutes of play.

The team defense stepped up on Tuesday, forcing 19 turnovers from the Maine offense. BU won the turnover margin for the fifth straight game due to stingy play on defense and great ball control on offense.
