Full-length dorm mirrors removed due to potential fire hazards

College of Fine Arts freshman Benjamin Harris called Residence Life’s removal of mirrors on his floor “absurd” and an unnecessary step to protect students in case of fire.

Within the past week, the full-length hallway mirrors were removed from all of the floors in Warren Towers and Rich, Claflin and Sleeper Halls. Boston University students have voiced their disapproval about the decision through social networking sites such as Facebook and post-it notes on the walls of their floors.

Students said their resident assistants at floor meetings over the weekend told them that a fire marshal directed the Residence Life office to remove the mirrors.

“This situation is ridiculous. We were told that the mirrors are fire hazards, yet I feel uninformed as to why this is,” said College of Arts and Sciences freshman Anna Stathopoulos, who lives in Warren Towers. “Now I am starting to wonder what other things in Warren are fire hazards. I’m worried that they are going to take off the mirrors in our bathrooms next.”

Students living on the 18th floor of Warren’s C Tower put up a post-it note that said, “We want our mirrors back!” Many of the post-it notes have been removed because the walls have been re-painted in order to disguise the spots where the mirrors were removed.

“I feel that taking off the mirrors was completely unnecessary,” said Allie Orlando, a freshman in the College of Communication. “When you are going to class, it’s convenient that the mirrors are right there by the elevators in case you to need to correct something.”

Students created a Facebook page titled “Warren Wants Its Mirrors Back” in an effort to get enough “likes” to sway authorities to “reconsider taking the mirrors down,” according to the page.

“The walls of Warren are absolutely barren . . . we all live in the legitimate fear that we will never see the reflection of our feet again,” the Facebook page says. “Hopefully, if we can get enough likes, we could perhaps get the authorities to reconsider taking the mirrors down.”

The page, which currently has 212 likes, includes pictures of Lady Gaga, with captions suggesting that students will attend class dressed in her style unless mirrors are restored.

“Those mirrors were in the perfect location,” said Caroline Kaufmann, a freshman in the School of Hospitality. “The least that they can do now is to put a full-length mirror in the bathroom so all of the freshman class doesn’t have to go to CVS to purchase mirrors for each of our rooms.”
