Women’s basketball goes for nine straight

The Boston University women’s basketball team will try to remain undefeated in its conference and extend its winning streak to nine games when it faces the University of Vermont this Wednesday night at Agganis Arena.

“We haven’t really talked about [being undefeated in America East] too much,” said BU coach Kelly Greenberg. “Since the [University of Maryland-Baltimore County] game we’ve been approaching each game by hitting the next win, not staying undefeated.”

Well rested after a week off, the Terriers are 8-0 in America East play after defeating UMBC last Wednesday by a score of 59-53. With this win, the Terriers improved their overall season record to 15-6.

“[In practice] what we were doing well, we want to make sure we keep doing them well,” Greenberg said. “We’ll shoot around early in the day [tomorrow] to let the team get used to playing in Agganis.”

In the game against the Retrievers, senior guard Alex Young and junior guard Chantell Alford netted 27 points combined. The duo also grabbed four rebounds apiece.

Senior forward Caroline Stewart added six points and managed to get her hands on a game-high 14 rebounds.

Alford leads the team with 12.4 points per game while Young is second with 11.2 ppg.

“We want to play two hands,” Greenberg said. “[In the past few games] we let them get back into the game. We’re focused on rebounding more than anything.”

The Terriers are fourth in America East for rebounding with an average of 37.8 rebounds per game.

Stewart and sophomore forward Rashidat Agboola lead the team in rebounds with 8.6 and 8.2 rpg, respectively.

Vermont (9-13, 3-6 America East) last faced BU earlier this season when it fell to the Terriers 61-60. The win started BU’s eight-game winning streak.

“[UVM is] so different now, “ Greenberg said. “They play hard and they’re scrappy. We just have to be ready for them to play up and down.”

In this close-scoring game, Agboola earned America East Player of the Game honors and recorded her third double-double of the season with 12 points and a career-high of 17 rebounds.

Along with Agboola, the Terrier offense had two other players also in double digits. Junior guard Mo Moran led the way with 19 points while Alford was close behind, sinking 13 points.

In their last game, the Catamounts cruised to a victory over Stony Brook University 63-36.

A trio of freshmen, guard Tierra Shumpert and forwards Niki Taylor and Kayla Burchill, netted a total of 43 points and grabbed 23 rebounds to secure the win.

UVM jumped to a 10-point lead early on and never looked back, out-rebounding Stony Brook 52-28. The Catamounts lead the conference in rebounds with 41.5 per game.

The Catamounts head into this game with their leading scorer, Lauren Buschmann sidelined by an injury. Instead, Burchill and sophomore guard Sam Simononis, who average 8.4 and 8.0 ppg, respectively, will head the offense.

The Catamounts will aim to break their three-game loosing streak to the Terriers when they face off against Boston. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on ESPN3.

The tilt is the first in a double-header with the BU men’s team.

“We’re excited to play at Agganis,” Greenberg said. “It’s a good opportunity since we never get to play there. We’ll just take it one possession at a time.”
