Police arrest suspect in connection to Brookline armed robberies

One of the suspects related to a series of armed robberies near Boston University’s Charles River Campus turned himself into the Brookline Police Thursday afternoon, officials said.

The suspect is thought to be one of three suspects who committed the second and third robberies, taking place Sept. 26 and Oct. 5 in the St. Paul Street area, said BU spokesman Colin Riley.

“It should make the people in the BU community and the Brookline residences more comfortable knowing that there’s been a break in the case,” he said. “Let’s hope it leads to the conclusion of these robberies and the arrest of all the suspects in the cases.”

Riley noted that the arrests were made just more than 24 hours after the release of the surveillance video and the announcement of the $10,000 award for information leading to arrest they have seen some success.

A Brookline Police Department dispatcher, who asked only to be identified as Greg, confirmed that the suspect, a juvenile, is connected to two of the four robberies that have occurred over the last two weeks. Brookline PD placed the suspect under arrest.

The BU Alert Service send out text messages and emails to the BU community at around 9 p.m. announcing the arrest.

The BUPD was not available for comment.

The arrest of the first suspect comes just one day after the Brookline PD’s news conference, when BU officials introduced the reward, and BU’s Town Hall meeting on the issue, where students expressed concerns about public safety.

BU is pleased that the increased media attention and additional pressure to find the suspects after the fourth incident led to an arrest, Riley said.
