Officials identify BU student killed in Allston bicycle incident

Officials identified the Boston University bicyclist killed in Allston on Monday as College of Arts and Sciences sophomore Chung-Wei Yang, who authorities confirmed came into contact with a Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority bus.

BU spokesman Colin Riley said the incident was “a terrible loss.”

“This is just so tragic when someone young with all their life in front of them is killed tragically,” Riley said. “It’s heartbreaking.”

Yang, a 21-year-old international student from Taiwan, was killed while riding his bike in Allston at about 6:30 p.m. on Monday in an incident that involved a MBTA bus.

Suffolk District Attorney spokesman Jake Wark said Monday that the bus and Yang did come into contact.

“The preliminary investigation shows there was contact between the bicycle and the bus,” Wark said. “The nature of that contact is going to be examined over the days and weeks to come.”

There is no indication that the bus driver or any passengers on the bus knew anyone was struck, the Boston Police Department stated in an update on their news blog on Monday.

Wark said evidence preserved by the Boston Police Department and crash reconstruction experts will fill in the holes of what exactly happened in the accident over the coming weeks.

The driver of the bus has not been charged with any offense, either for negligent driving or driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, Wark said.

MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo said there were “no problems to report” in the drug test the bus driver took after the incident.

“He [the bus driver] remains out of service while investigators work to establish the facts in this matter,” Pesaturo said.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at Marsh Chapel for any students who would like to remember Yang, Riley said, and the school offers counseling services to anyone who might need them.
