Former Boston University men’s basketball captain Brett Brown was named head coach of the Philadelphia 76ers Wednesday.
Brown played for the Terriers from 1980 to 1983 and was team MVP during the 1980-81 season. He helped BU reach the NCAA Tournament in 1983 under coach Rick Pitino. Serving as captain of the Terriers in 1982 and 1983, Brown ranks sixth in BU history in career assists with 404. His career assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.19 is third in school history.
Before becoming head coach of the Sixers, he served as a member of the San Antonio Spurs organization. He initially was a member of the basketball operations department in 1998-99 but left to coach in the National Australian Basketball League. He joined the Spurs once again in 2002 as director of player development, and was promoted to assistant coach in the 2007 season. He was with the Spurs for their championships in 1999, 2003, 2005 and 2007.
He also served as head coach of the Australian National Team, guiding the team to a 3-3 finish in the 2012 London Olympics despite missing injured star Andrew Bogut.
Brown is the fourth person with BU ties to take an NBA head coaching position, joining John Kuester, Steve Clifford and Pitino.
