BU grad student victim of Brookline attempted robbery

A male Boston University graduate student was the assaulted in an attempted robbery early Thursday morning near the Charles River Campus, according to a Brookline Police Department report.

The student reported he was pushed onto the sidewalk while exiting a taxi on Beacon Street in Brookline after walking his girlfriend home that night. A male assailant then demanded the student hand over his cell phone and money, according to the official police report.

The victim stood up, continuing to struggle with the assailant until the assailant fled down Beacon Street eastbound and then turned right on St. Paul Street towards Sewall Avenue.

The suspect was described as a 5-foot-10 young black male of medium build with black hair, the report stated. He was also described as wearing a black hooded sweatshirt.

The victim reported the incident to BU Police Department and Brookline PD almost 12 hours after the incident occurred. He was released after being treated by BU medical staff for facial wounds he sustained during the assault.

During the 2012-13 academic year, BU students were victims of eight robberies and attempted robberies, all of which occurred in the area near West Campus and Northern Brookline.

In January, a BU Medical Campus research assistant was robbed and stabbed near the corner of Browne Street and Pleasant Street. Suspects were arrested later that week.

Officials increased patrols in the area in response to the string of incidents.
