Pressure cooker prompts bomb squad response, street closures by Kenmore Square

Boston Police conducted a controlled detonation on a suspicious pressure cooker near Charlesgate East and Commonwealth Avenue at about 11:47 a.m. Thursday.

A detail officer in the area noticed the cooker on patrol and then notified headquarters for support, according to a Thursday news release  from the BPD website. No explosives were found upon detonation, and there were no injuries.

Boston University Police Department officers and Massachusetts State Troopers also responded to the situation, and the bomb squad performed the detonation as a precaution, said Boston University Police Department Captain Robert Malloy.

Officers blocked off traffic to cars and pedestrians near the Kenmore Square area for about an hour before giving the all clear and letting traffic flow normally.

Details on why the cooker was there are still unknown, and an investigation for more information is ongoing, Malloy said.

The incident comes almost 7 months after the April 15  Boston Marathon bombings in which two men detonated pressure cookers loaded with shrapnel as improvised bombs that killed three people and injured more than 200. They were on Boylston Street , less than two miles  from the controlled detonation Thursday.

BPD has asked anyone with addition information regarding the cooker to call District 4 station detectives at 617-343-5619. The anonymous tip number for BPD is 1-800-494-8177.
