Women’s basketballs falters against Bucknell

The Boston university women’s basketball team took on Bucknell University Saturday afternoon at the Sojka Pavilion in Pennsylvania. It was a tough afternoon for the Terriers (11-18, 6-10 Patriot League) as they fell to the Bison (15-11, 10-6 Patriot League) by a 62-50 margin.

“We came out with a lot of intensity,” said BU coach Kelly Greenberg. “We played some zone, which hurt us with the rebounding, but I thought it was working. We were matching up with them well first half, but it got away from us second half. Our offense just couldn’t get it going. I think we only shot 25 percent from beyond the arc — we need to do better.”

The Terriers got the scoring started with a jump shot from senior forward Rashidat Agboola and then extended their lead to three points off a jumper from junior forward Mollie McKendrick.

“We think the combination of Mollie and Rashidat into games, that people have to extend out on Mollie, so it’s getting Rashidat a lot better looks,” Greenberg said. “People double down [on Agboola] so she can get the ball out to some of our shooting guards. We feel really good about getting her the ball, a lot.”

The Bison followed with a 7-0 run capped by a jump shot from guard Shelby Romine, making the score 8-4. BU came back to take a 14-10 lead with 11:54 left in the first half, following freshman guard Sarah Hope’s second trey ball of the game.

Bucknell was held without a field goal for almost 11 minutes, but took advantage of their trips to the charity stripe to tie the game at 17 with 5:26 left in the first frame. After being down for a while, the Bison finally took the lead back with 1:59 left in the half on a 3-pointer from Romine.

With the teams battling back-and-forth, BU fell behind 28-25 going into the break. The frame featured two ties and three lead changes, as the Terriers matched the intensity of Bucknell, as BU looked to take the season series from the Bison.

The second half got underway, and Bucknell got on the board with a layup from forward Audrey Dotson. The Terriers continued to match the Bison’s play, as BU took a 34-33 lead with 14:01 left in the first half. Bucknell responded with a 9-0 run, though, and took command of the game.

The Terriers tried to claw their way back into the game, cutting the Bison lead back to eight with 3:11 left in the second. Agboola, one of the bright spots in the contest, ended the scoring with a layup. That would be as close as they got however, as the Terriers eventually fell to the Bison 62-50.

Agboola finished the game with 15 points and 11 rebounds, a double-double. She also added three assists, two blocks and a steal.

On the other side of the bench, Romine finished with a double-double of her own, recording 20 points and 11 rebounds, while forward Claire DeBoer added 13 points and 11 boards.

Despite the loss, Greenberg said she liked the effort her team showed and said she believes the wins will come in the future.

“We played really well today,” said Greenberg. “Our defense held it down for the majority of the game, you know, but our offense just could not get anything. We weren’t getting that bad of looks, we just need to start hitting them. Sometimes we hit them, sometimes we don’t. But if we want to win, we need to starting hitting our shots.”
