Women’s lacrosse explodes for season-high 19 goals

In the midst of a five-game winning streak, the Boston University women’s lacrosse team’s offense proved it has the ability to be deadly. Wednesday against the University of New Hampshire at Nickerson Field, the attack put on a clinic, exploding for a season-high 19 goals against the University of New Hampshire.

Nine different players scored for the Terriers (6-5, 4-0 Patriot League).

“It really makes me happy,” said BU coach Liz Robertshaw of the performance. “The way our offense came out today, they made a statement. It’s something we’ve been waiting a while for, and they finally came through. I always had confidence in our attack, it was just a matter of time.”

The game was fairly close early on, as BU found itself tied with the Wildcats (5-7) 3-3 at the 24:06 mark in the first half. That was as close as it would be, however, as the Terrier offense took things into their own hands.

BU embarked on a 10-0 run over the span of 19 minutes and never looked back. The team went into the break riding a 14-5 lead, already exceeding its highest goal total on the 2014 campaign.

Senior attack Elizabeth Morse continued her resurgent play, scoring a season-high five goals.

Ever since Robertshaw talked to her attacking players, Morse has answered the bell.

“I challenged our whole attack a few games ago,” Robertshaw said. “And [Morse] has responded. Even when she started to play better, I kept challenging the rest of our attack. Now, we still have a ways to go but she has really picked up the slack. I knew we can do some more things to get our other attacks involved, but [Morse’s] play has really been a lift.”

In addition to Morse’s performance, senior midfielder Becca Church added her second hat trick on the year.

The seniors have already established a model of consistency for the underclassmen to follow. Church leads the team in both points (20) and goals (17), while Morse is second on the team in goals with 13.

“Our seniors played really well today,” Robertshaw said. “I really like what they’re doing. But just because they are playing well does not mean the rest of our team can slack off. We played really well today as a unit, but we need to keep playing this way. We can’t let up, and that starts with our seniors.”

Junior attack Kelsey Marafioti also added a hat trick of her own, with her three goals being a career-high total.

In BU’s last two outings, the team scored a combined 15 goals. This lack of offense put a lot of pressure on the defense, as all five of their previous wins came by either one or two goals. But Wednesday’s game, things changed for the better.

The Terriers were exceptional in winning both the draw control and shot battle, as they outshot the Wildcats 41-21 and had a 19-11 advantage in draw controls. If the Terriers want to continue to dominate on the offensive end like they did Wednesday, they will need to continue their success in these areas.

For Robertshaw, the key to the victory starts with the fundamentals.

“You hear people say that a lot,” Robertshaw said. “You put a lot of emphasis on the fundamentals. You hope that players coming in were already taught that but you always have to stress it. It’s just a mind thing. It’s all in the head. But I know if I continue to stress it, combined with our talent, we can continue to win.”
