Poulin named women’s hockey captain, Stoneburgh and Tutino chosen as assistant captains

With 2013-14 captains Louise Warren and Kaleigh Fratkin graduating, the Boston University women’s hockey team and coach Brian Durocher have named a new group to be leaders on the ice for the upcoming season. The team announced that senior forward Marie-Philip Poulin will captain the 2014-15 squad, while senior defenseman Shannon Stoneburgh and senior forward Kayla Tutino were tabbed as assistant captains.

Last season, the Terriers were without Poulin, who was playing with the Canadian Olympic team that claimed the gold medal in Sochi, Russia. In the final contest that saw Canada claim a 3-2 overtime win over the United States, Poulin shined, scoring the tying goal with under a minute remaining in the third period before scoring the game-winner in overtime.

During Poulin’s first three years at BU, the Quebec native recorded 54 goals and 73 assists in 79 career games. Poulin’s 19 goals and 36 assists during the 2012-13 season helped the Terriers make it all the way to the NCAA National Championship game for the second time in program history. She also took home numerous accolades in her junior year, including being named to both the Frozen Four and Hockey East Tournament teams.

Without the scoring threat of Poulin on the ice last season, the Terriers relied more on their defensive corps to reach the NCAA Tournament. Stoneburgh was part of the contingent that held opposing teams to 2.61 goals per contest, a total good enough for fourth best in the Hockey East. Individually, Stoneburgh blocked 45 shots last year, which ranked fourth on the team.

While she was minus-5 last year, the senior has compiled an impressive plus-21 for her career at BU. She recorded seven assists last season, giving her 16 helpers for her career and 22 overall points. At the end of the season, the Terriers named her the Most Improved Player of 2013.

Tutino posted 10 points through 14 games to start off the 2013-14 campaign, including a multi-point effort in a 3-2 overtime win against Northeastern University on Oct. 29. She was not able to continue her hot start, however, as an injury kept her out of the game action for the last 23 contests, including the Hockey East playoffs and the NCAA Tournament quarterfinal against the University of Minnesota.

In her first three seasons with the Terriers, Tutino proved to be a consistent player on the score sheet with 38 goals and 39 assists. The 19 goals and 20 assists that she tallied in 2011-12 earned her a spot on the Hockey East All-Rookie Team.

The trio of captains will look to lead BU to its sixth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and fourth straight Hockey East Championship.
