How to Travel to Other Schools in the Area

As a center of medical, technological and business innovation, Boston mixes culture and history to create a city that draws college students from all over the globe. Because the city houses a large number of academic institutions within close proximity of each other, Boston University students often utilize public transportation to visit friends, attend lectures and conferences, meet new people or simply explore other campuses. There are about 60 colleges and universities in or surrounding Boston. Interested in getting to another college in the area? Check out directions to a sampling of these schools below. (Note: All traveling times, especially those for walking, are subject to change, based on where you are coming from on campus. Directions start from Marsh Plaza at BU Central.)

Berklee College of Music: 1140 Boylston St., Boston

Walking: Head east on Commonwealth Avenue past Kenmore Square, and make a right onto Charlesgate West. After passing the Massachusetts Turnpike and Ipswich Street, you will come to the intersection of Charlesgate and Boylston Street. Turn left onto Boylston Street. Walk until you meet the intersection of Boylston Street and Massachusetts Avenue. Berklee College of Music is on the right. Estimated time of trip: 20 minutes.

Subway: Get on the Green Line at BU Central and take it inbound toward Park Street. Get off at the Hynes Convention Center stop. Take a left out of the station on Massachusetts Avenue until it intersects with Boylston Street. Estimated time of trip: 15 minutes. Boston College: 140 Commonwealth Ave., Chestnut Hill

Subway: Get on the B-train on the Green Line at BU Central headed outbound to Boston College. Get off at the Boston College station, cross the street, walk by The Parish of St. Ignatius of Loyola and follow the road until you reach the campus entrances. Estimated time of trip: 30 minutes. Cost: $2.60 with a CharlieTicket one-way, $2.10 with a CharlieCard one-way.

Emerson College: 120 Boylston St., Boston

Walking: Walk east on Commonwealth Avenue past Kenmore Square toward the Boston Common. Turn right on Arlington Street and then make a left on Boylston Street. Continue on Boylston Street until you see the yellow and purple Emerson school banners on the various campus buildings. Estimated time of trip: 45 minutes.

Subway: Get on the Green Line at BU Central headed inbound toward Park Street and get off at the Boylston Street stop. Head south on Tremont Street away from the AMC Loews Boston Common 19 movie theater, and locate the purple and yellow school banners. Estimated time of trip: 20 minutes. Cost: $2.60 with a CharlieTicket, $2.10 with a CharlieCard one-way.

Emmanuel College: 400 Fenway, Boston

Walking: Cross over the T tracks on Commonwealth Avenue from Marsh Plaza and continue on to  St. Mary’s Street. Walk on St. Mary’s Street toward South Campus, and make a left onto Mountford Street. Turn right onto Park Drive and take a slight right to stay on Park Drive. Continue onto Riverway, which will eventually turn into Fenway. Estimated time of trip: 15 minutes.

Harvard University:1350 Massachusetts Ave., Cambridge

Walking: Walk east on Commonwealth Avenue toward the BU Bridge by the George Sherman Union and BU Academy. Cross the bridge and keep left to turn onto Memorial Drive. Follow the road for about 2 miles before turning right onto Plympton Street. After a few blocks, turn left onto Massachusetts Avenue. The Smith Campus Center will be on your left after two blocks. Estimated time of trip: 45 minutes.

Subway: Get on the Green Line at BU Central and take it inbound to Park Street. Get off at Park Street, and while inside the station, transfer to the Red Line headed outbound toward Alewife. Get off at the Harvard Square stop. Cross over Dunster Street once out of the station to get to the Smith Campus Center. Estimated time of trip: 30 minutes. Cost: $2.60 with a CharlieTicket one-way, $2.10 with a CharlieCard one-way.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology: 77 Massachusetts Ave., Cambridge

Walking: Head east on Commonwealth Avenue toward Kenmore Square. Make a slight left in Kenmore Square to go onto Beacon Street. Turn left onto Massachusetts Avenue and cross the bridge. MIT will be on your right after crossing the bridge. If you cross Vassar Street, you went too far. Estimated time of trip: 32 minutes.

Subway: Get on the Green Line headed inbound toward Park Street at BU Central. Get off at the Park Street stop and transfer onto the Red Line outbound toward Alewife. Get off at the Kendall/MIT stop. Head west on Main Street away from the Charles Rivet and make a left onto Vassar Street. Make a left on Massachusetts Avenue. Estimated time of trip: 35 minutes. Cost: $2.60 with a CharlieTicket one-way, $2.10 with a CharlieCard one-way.

Northeastern University: 360 Huntington Ave., Boston

Walking: Cross over the T tracks on Commonwealth Avenue and continue on to St. Mary’s Street. Turn left onto Mountfort Street. Turn right onto Arundel Street. Continue onto Miner Street. Turn left onto Fullerton Street and pass Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates. Continue onto Kilmarnock Street. Turn left onto Boylston Street and then a right onto Jersey Street. Cross over Park Drive and onto the Emerald Necklace. Cut left diagonally through the Emerald Necklace, over the Back Bay Fens and continue on to Forsyth Way. Turn left onto Huntington Avenue. Your destination will be on the right. Estimated time of trip: 35 minutes.

Subway: Get on the Green Line headed inbound toward Park Street via the BU Central station. Get off at the Arlington stop. Within the station, take the stairs to reach the outbound train platform. Take the E-train toward Heath Street and get off at Northeastern University Station. Estimated time of trip: 35 minutes. Cost: $2.60 with a CharlieTicket one-way, $2.10 with a CharlieCard one-way.

University of Massachusetts-Boston: 100 Morrissey Blvd., Boston

Subway: Get on the Green Line headed inbound toward Park Street via the BU Central Station. Get off at the Park Street station. Transfer onto the Red Line headed outbound toward Ashmont or Braintree and get off at JFK/UMass. Head out of the station and follow the signs for the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum and UMass-Boston. Look for the bus stop that says JFK Library/UMass-Boston. This is a free shuttle bus to get to the campus. It runs seven days a week. Estimated time of trip: 50 minutes. Cost: $2.60 with a CharlieTicket one-way, $2.10 with a CharlieCard one-way.

Simmons College: 300 Fenway, Boston

Walking: Cross over the T tracks on Commonwealth Avenue and continue onto St. Mary’s Street. Turn left on Mountford Street. Turn right onto Park Drive and take a slight right to stay on Park Drive. Continue onto Riverway, which will eventually turn into Fenway. The school will be on your right. If you see Palace Road, you went too far. Estimated time of trip: 20 minutes.

Suffolk University: 8 Ashburton Place, Boston

Walking: Head east on Commonwealth Avenue toward Kenmore Square. Take a slight left to continue onto Beacon Street. Continue walking past the Boston Public Garden and Boston Common. Turn left onto Bowdoin Street and then right onto Ashburton Place. Estimated time of trip: 50 minutes.

Subway: Get on the Green Line headed inbound toward Park Street via the BU Central station. Get off at the Park Street stop and exit the station. Turn left out of the station to walk down Park Street toward the Massachusetts State House (the large building with the golden dome). Turn right onto Beacon Street and then left on Bowdoin Street. Make a right on Ashburton Place. Estimated time of trip: 25 minutes. Cost: $2.60 with a CharlieTicket one-way, $2.10 with a CharlieCard one-way.

Subway: Get on the Green Line headed inbound toward Park Street via the BU Central station. Get off at the Park Street stop and transfer to the Red Line headed outbound toward Alewife. Get off at the Davis Square stop. Exit the station and turn right onto College Avenue. At the traffic circle near Nathan Tufts Park, continue straight to continue on College Avenue. Take a slight left onto Boston Avenue. The school will be on your right. Estimated time of trip: 1 hour and 10 minutes. Cost: $2.60 with a CharlieTicket one-way, $2.10 with a CharlieCard one-way.
