Walt Corbean tabbed as men’s basketball assistant coach

Another new face will grace the Boston University campus this fall, as Walt Corbean will serve as the Boston University men’s basketball team’s newest assistant coach. BU head coach Joe Jones and BU Athletics announced the hiring early Tuesday morning.

Corbean comes to Boston by way of Wake Forest University. After serving five years as the director of basketball operations, Corbean spent the last two seasons on the bench as an assistant coach for the Demon Deacons, who play in the competitive Atlantic Coast Conference.

“We are all very excited about Walt joining our staff,” Jones said in a statement. “I have known Walt for over 15 years and he brings a great deal of experience to our staff. You add in his character, work ethic and knowledge, and we have someone who I believe will make a significant impact on and off the court.”

Before joining the staff at Wake Forest, Corbean held a successful head coaching position at Indiana University Southeast. In his seven years at the helm of the Grenadiers, Corbean went 140-95 and his squads earned three National Association of Intercollegiate Athletic National Tournament appearances. His 2005-06 team put up a record of 30-4 and ended the season ranked ninth in the NAIA Division II poll.

The Cincinnati native’s coaching career began at his high school alma mater -The Seven Hills School – where he spent four years as an assistant varsity coach and head junior varsity coach.

In his two seasons as a player at Xavier University (1985-87), Corbean helped the team to two conference championships and a 44-18 record. He received his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Xavier in 1991 and earned his master’s degree in secondary education at Northern Kentucky University in 1997.

Corbean also brings with him Patriot League experience, as he was a member of the U.S. Military Academy coaching staff for three seasons (1995-98), including one season as the Black Knights’ recruiting coordinator.
