Blodgett named women’s basketball assistant coach

It didn’t take long for Boston University women’s basketball coach Katy Steding to add to her staff.

Steding named Cindy Blodgett, a former All-American and WNBA veteran, as one of BU’s assistant coaches for the upcoming 2014-15 season.

This marks Blodgett’s second tenure with the Terriers, as the Clinton, Maine, native served as an assistant coach at BU during the 1999-2000 season, working in both recruiting and film exchange in addition to her usual coaching duties on the hardwood.

“I am excited and humbled to welcome Cindy back into the Boston University family,” Steding said in a statement. “With her elite experience as a player and coach, Cindy is a great fit for me and this team. Moreover, she is a person of great character and will be a terrific mentor and role model for the young women we lead.”

Blodgett forged an impressive legacy while playing at the University of Maine from 1994-98. While in Orono, Blodgett led the Black Bears to their first four NCAA tournament appearances in program history while earning four All-American accolades.

A two-time America East Player of the Year, Blodgett was just the second woman in NCAA Division-I history to lead the country in scoring for two consecutive seasons, averaging an impressive 27 points per game during his sophomore and junior campaigns.

Following her stellar collegiate career, Blodgett was drafted sixth overall by the Cleveland Rockers in the 1998 WNBA Draft. Blodgett spent one year in Cleveland before being traded to the Sacramento Monarchs, where she played for three years, including alongside Steding during the 2000 season.

Five years after her first coaching stint at BU, Blodgett served as an assistant coach/recruiting coordinator at Brown University from 2005-07 before being named as head coach of the Black Bears prior to the 2007-08 season. After coaching the Black Bears for four years, Blodgett worked as an assistant coach at the University of Rhode Island from 2011-14.

“I’m extremely grateful and beyond excited to be a member of Katy’s staff and to be a part of the BU Athletic Department once again,” Blodgett said in a press release. “Katy is a proven winner on every level but her success on the basketball court pales in comparison to what a wonderful person she is.”
