Women’s basketball names 4 members of freshman class

New coach Katy Steding will not be the only fresh face for the Boston University women’s basketball program, as the team announced the four members of its freshman class Friday morning.

Erin Bayram is a 6-foot-2 forward from Batavia, Ill., who played four years of varsity basketball at Batavia High School, serving as captain for three seasons. She twice received All-Area honors and was a recipient of the Daily Herald Sportsmanship and Scholastic Award. As a senior, she guided her team to a regional championship.

Another forward, Kara Sheftic, is also set to join the Terriers. Sheftic hails from Essex Junction, Vt., and stands at 6-foot-1. She four-year career at Essex High School with 1,014 points and 775 rebounds.

While at Essex, she earned First Team All-State honors as both a junior and a senior. She was also a two-time First-Team All-Metro award winner. Sheftic competed at the U.S. Junior National Tournament in Washington D.C., with her AAU team and received All-Tournament honors during her junior year.

Meghan Doogan, a 5-foot-9 guard from Delaware also boasts an illustrious prep career. In her four years at Concord High School, she received All-State recognition three times. Doogan led her team to an undefeated conference and league championship record during her final season.

Rounding out the class is Corrine Williams, a 6-foot-1 guard from Bloomfield, Conn. At Bloomfield High School, Williams earned Rookie of the Year honors as a freshman and was named the team’s Most Outstanding Player in her second year. She won the title of the team’s Most Valuable Player as a junior and received All-State honors as a senior.

These freshmen will hope to blend well with the six returning players on BU’s roster. Steading’s first season and the Terriers’ second season in the Patriot League looks to be a rebuilding year. The team will be without several key players, but Steading said she hopes the new freshmen can help fill that void.

“We have a really terrific, balanced class with Corinne, Erin, Kara and Meghan, and I’m excited to get them on campus and get going!” Steding said in a statement.

“As individuals they have amassed great accomplishments and now as teammates they’re going to come in and have a great impact on BU basketball.”
