Two men who reportedly entered a Boston University dorm Sunday morning, one of whom allegedly assaulted two female residents, pleaded not guilty to charges brought against them in Brighton District Court yesterday afternoon.
Daniel Glaser, 20, a Lehigh University junior, was charged with two counts of indecent assault and battery, two counts of unarmed burglary and one count of breaking and entering at nighttime, all felony charges; Aaron Goodliss, 21, reportedly a junior at Johnson ‘ Wales University, was charged with breaking and entering at nighttime and possession of marijuana, a misdemeanor charge.
Brighton District Court Judge David Donnelly set bail at $7,500 for Glaser and $2,500 for Goodliss. He ordered both to keep off BU property. Donnelly also ordered documents in the on-going investigation closed to the public.
Glaser and Goodliss — who had been signed into Claflin Hall by two female residents who did not know them, according to the Dean of Students Office — reportedly entered two separate unlocked rooms, where Glaser allegedly assaulted two female residents before being arrested, according to reports.
Assistant District Attorney Megan O’Rourke said BU police received a call to Claflin at 4:11 a.m. According to a statement released by the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, BU police surmised that Glaser had been signed into Claflin around 2:30 a.m. and was asked to leave after he “became unruly and made unwanted advances toward one of his hosts.” O’Rourke said during the arraignment that Glaser has a faced criminal charges in the past.
BU police allege that Glaser called Goodliss over to Claflin after this, and they then persuaded two residents to sign them into the dorm, claiming they had forgotten their BU IDs, according to the statement.
The first alleged assault occurred around 4 a.m. on the 12th floor of Claflin when Glaser allegedly entered a room in which an 18-year-old female resident was sleeping. According to the alleged victim, who asked not to be identified, she woke up when she felt a man wrap his arms around her as she lay sleeping.
O’Rourke alleges that Glaser touched the resident’s breasts and wrapped his leg around her before she got out of bed.
The alleged victim said she woke up, saw Goodliss laughing in the doorway and forced Glaser out of her bed.
After leaving the first alleged victim’s room, Glaser and Goodliss were said to have entered a nearby room. O’Rourke alleges that as Glaser attempted to climb into a female resident’s lofted bed, he touched the alleged victim’s breasts.
Two roommates of the alleged second victim said they told Glaser and Goodliss to leave. According to the District Attorney’s Office statement, Glaser and Goodliss exited the floor through the stairwell and were then detained by BU police.
Lehigh University confirmed Glaser is a junior at the Bethlehem, Penn., college. Lehigh spokeswoman Sarah Cooke said in an email that the university expects “students to abide by the law, both on and off campus, and illegal behavior is subject to action through the code of conduct.” She said the school may take judicial action against Glaser.
The spring semester began at Lehigh Jan. 14, before the alleged events of Sunday morning.
A biographical description of Glaser, who ran for student government office at Lehigh his freshman year, is available on the university’s website. Glaser’s profile states he founded the Rotary Interact community service organization in Brookline during high school.
O’Rourke said Goodliss is a junior at Johnson ‘ Wales University, a culinary school, in Providence, R.I. She also said Glaser and Goodliss, both Chestnut Hill residents, have been acquaintances for 12 years.
Glaser and Goodliss are scheduled to return to court Feb. 8 for a pre-trial conference.
Despite the large number of colleges in the area, Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office spokesman Jake Wark said few alleged assaults of the nature reported Sunday come to court.
“Cases like this are fortunately rare,” he said. “Had the facts of this case been even a little bit different, we could be looking at a very, very serious crime.”
