Although I appreciated Kevin Joy’s article on Punk Rock Aerobics (“Spandex Revolution”, Jan. 24, p.5) I would like to correct something he said. He seems to insinuate that Tae Bo and Kickboxing are the same thing, when actually, kickboxing is a serious martial art that teaches discipline and self-defense, while Tae Bo is an aerobics class where form is hardly taught at all. I have never attended a Tae Bo class, so presumably Mr. Joy is correct in his assumption that all their instructors are “the perky, Lycra-wearing ex-cheerleader types”, but in the past two and a half years that I have been practicing San Shou (Chinese kickboxing), never have I had an instructor who I would be able to describe as “perky”. Strict, dedicated National and World Champions who have a desire to share their knowledge and love of the sport with others, absolutely. Daniela V. Polès CAS ’03 617/501 0093
