The Boston University men’s basketball team took its 14th win in 15 tries Wednesday, beating Stony Brook University, 66-56, at the Stony Brook Sports Complex in front of 1,019 fans.
In a homecoming of sorts, sophomore guard and Brooklyn, N.Y. native Shaun Wynn scored 15 points and added four steals and four assists to lead BU (14-3, 8-1 America East), helping the Terriers eventually pull away as the second half waned.
“Any road win is a good win,” said BU coach Dennis Wolff. “It was a good game defensively and we played well in the second half.”
After gaining a one-point advantage at the half, Stony Brook (6-12, 3-6) did not convert a field goal in the first 5:25 of the second frame. BU gained a three-point edge during that time, and would not trail again.
BU took the lead for good on a Wynn layup with 16:50 to go, but Stony Brook kept things close, as two three-pointers by Mitchell Beauford cut the Terrier lead to 39-37 with 13:12 left. Wolff’s team went on a 13-4 run from there, as five different Terriers contributed at least two points in that span. Stony Brook would get no closer than eight for the remainder of the game.
The Terriers shot 48 percent from the floor while holding the Seawolves to just eight field goals in the second half and 18 in the game (18-47). Senior guard Kevin Fitzgerald scored a season-high 10 points to go along with four rebounds, and BU solidified the victory by going 18-28 from the line, including 16-23 in the second half. Junior guard Chaz Carr was 6-6 on free throws, scoring 10 points and grabbing six boards.
“All in all it was a good win,” Wolff said, mentioning that Fitzgerald, Carr and Wynn played especially well.
Forward Spencer Corey tallied a game-high 19 points for Stony Brook and grabbed six rebounds. The Terriers atoned for last season’s first-ever loss to the Seawolves by holding guard D.J. Munir in check. The senior scored 14 and committed six turnovers Wednesday night, compared with the 35 points and nine rebounds he posted the last time the two teams played.
Winning by double digits for the first time since Jan. 7 and for just the fifth time all season, the Terriers pressured the Seawolves into 22 turnovers, but were outrebounded, 35-29.
The win keeps BU one game behind the University of Vermont in the conference standings, as the Catamounts defeated the University at Albany, 53-48, Wednesday night.
The Terriers return home to take on Albany Sunday afternoon at Case Gymnasium in a game televised on WLVI in Boston.
