Upon reading yesterday’s article, ‘Campus groups react to address,’ I was absolutely appalled at the behavior of the BU College Democrats while watching the State of the Union address Tuesday night (Jan. 29, pg. 1). Flipping off the president and yelling ‘sit your ass down!’ at a congressman is completely immature and unbecoming behavior for politically active college students. I thought that Ted Kennedy sleeping, Nancy Pelosi snickering and John Kerry zoning out during the speech was bad enough. Apparently, this rude behavior extends to unelected Democrats as well.
No matter what your political affiliation, the president commands a certain amount of respect while he is speaking. Even when Bill Clinton was in midst of his impeachment scandal, Republicans rose when he arrived at the halls of Congress to deliver his State of the Union address. Unfortunately, similar courtesy is not extended to Republicans. Disagreeing with the president on certain issues is vital for a healthy democracy. Flipping off the president, whether in person or on television, is juvenile and disrespectful. If Democrats would stop this disgusting and rude behavior, they might win an election once in a while.
