I was VERY surprised not to find any information about the Terrier Classic in Friday’s edition (01/30) of the Daily Free Press. It was VERY disappointing that the biggest track event of the year and probably the most prestigious sports event hosted by Boston University was not even mentioned by what is supposed to be, both an independent and communicative source of information for BU students. Terrier Classic is an indoor track meet which this year attracted such athletes as Gregory Haughton, Olympic Games and World Championships bronze medallist, Nolle Graham, American junior record holder in the long jump, Ronetta Smith, finalist of last years World Championships, Obra Hogans, Sarah Dupre-Healy, Kim Smith, Kate O’Neill, Victoriya Rybalko, all, NCAA division I medallists. They all came to BU indoor track expecting great competition on what is believed to be, the fastest track in the country. They got what they came for. On Friday evening, Kim Smith ran the second fastest collegiate time in the 5000m. The time (15:18), qualified her for the Olympics. Greg Haughton ran 3rd fastest time in the World in the 400m, while Basil Campbell got the fastest time in the 55m hurdles. Well, what about BU athletes. They hold on well against the best. Andre Nacaxe finished second in the 500m, BU 4x400m team (which I am proud to be part of) was 3rd in competition against such teams as Seton Hall and LIU, Erin Cadden finished 5th in the 55m hurdles. So, nothing in this meet attracted the DFP? What definitely attracted the newspaper, were the basketball games against Albany and hockey against Umass-Lowell, both, division II schools. No offense but is that how we are building the school spirit? I am proud to be BU student and athlete. I am proud of BU basketball and hockey. I will always be excited about their games, especially when they are playing the best teams in the country. But I think we can all be equally excited when our athletes compete against the fastest people that ever walked on this planet. And by the way, thanks to all those who came to watch. The atmosphere was unforgettable and it will get better each time, we are going for BIG THINGS this year.
