Coming off a thrilling 4-3 win over the University of Montreal in an exhibition match on Jan. 28, the men’s team hoped to come up with another close victory against the University of Maryland-Baltimore County on Friday but fell just short against the Retrievers.
The Terriers got an 8-6 win in third doubles from senior co-captain Ross Lohr and sophomore Miron Nissim, which evened doubles at one after BU’s second doubles tandem of freshman Jeff Chudacoff and sophomore Charles Weinstein lost, 8-6. At first, doubles senior co-captain Barrett Wolf and junior Giulio Gallarotti saved a match point, but fell 9-7 to give UMBC the doubles point.
The Retrievers upped their lead to 3-0 with wins in second singles and fourth singles. BU responded with wins in first singles from Wolf and third singles from Chudacoff, who used a heavy dose of slices and lobs to get the victory.
With senior co-captain Ross Lohr leading his sixth singles match and Nissim ahead 2-0 in the second set after losing the first set in a tiebreak at fifth singles, it appeared BU had a great shot at pulling off the comeback victory.
Unfortunately for the Terriers, Nissim hurt his ankle diving while trying to reach a shot his opponent hit behind him. After getting his ankle taped, Nissim continued playing and won the next two points, but his opponent took advantage of his limited mobility to win the next six games and the match. Lohr closed out the overall match with a victory to make the final score 4-3.
“[Nissim’s] injury was tough luck, but I was pleased with how well we played against a very good UMBC team,” said BU assistant coach John Gautschi.
The men’s team will return to action on Friday against Boston College.
“BC is always tough and their courts are very fast, but spirits are high, so we will go there and see what we can do,” Lohr said.
