A College of Engineering freshman was hospitalized after he was struck by a car while running across Commonwealth Avenue yesterday afternoon, according to the Boston University Police Department.
Wesley Griswold had been waiting at the crosswalk in front of the Tsai Performance Center when he quickly ran across the street to catch the T before 2 p.m. The street light was green, said BUPD Sgt. Jack St. Hilaire.
“According to witnesses, [Griswold] was darting across the street,” he said. “Then, he ran into the path of the vehicle and got knocked into the air.”
The driver, a Boston University student whose name BUPD would not release, was driving with an unidentified passenger and did not sustain emergency injury.
Griswold fell onto the black BMW Z4 Roadster’s windshield after being hit, St. Hilaire said.
“It appeared that speed was not a factor,” he said.
Griswold was transported to Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and traffic continued soon after, St. Hilaire said. Griswold was still at the hospital as of last night.
“They’re serious injuries, but they’re not life-threatening,” St. Hilaire said. “[Griswold] was conscious and alert at the scene.”
The Boston Fire Department, Boston Police Department, BUPD and transit authority safety inspectors responded to the scene, directing traffic and halting T service for a short period, St. Hilaire said.
Griswold’s shoes came off due to the vehicle’s impact, said one witness.
“[The driver] was going really fast,” said College of Arts and Sciences senior Becky Dreifuss. “I’ve never seen a body do that.”
Another witness said the driver appeared to be speeding.
“In my estimation, [the driver] was going really fast, compared to traffic,” said College of Engineering junior Christian Dubsky.
BUPD urges the BU community to be careful about crossing the street, St. Hilaire said.
“You have a lot of students who are constantly darting across the street,” he said. “Students should be aware and cognizant of the traffic conditions.”
