Is it original? No. Good? Yes. Better than From Under The Cork Tree? Not a chance. Fall Out Boy is great to listen to for the hooks that made them famous, but on Infinity on High the hooks are simply lacking. However, there is plenty of pop-groove on this album to get your body moving. The opening song, “Thriller,” sets the record’s tempo with some aggressive metal riffs and an intro from the one-and-the-only Jay-Z. The piano-driven “Golden” is a slow departure, but it works because it’s short and appropriately placed between the album’s power-ballad, “Hum Hallelujah,” and arguably its best track, “Thnks Fr Th Mmrs.” A booming horn intro and an enchanting mandolin solo towards the end of “Thnks Fr Th Mmrs” are sure to cast listeners under a spell of awe and the track’s music magic is owed in part to co-producer Babyface. The diehards will love a record dedicated to them. It may not deliver the same “Sugar” high for everyone else, but Infinity is still pretty sweet. Grade: B +
