I am writing in response to recent stories on the continuation of the MBTA’s Night Owl service. While the Night Owl service is indeed a good first step toward dealing with the problem of late night transportation and safety, it is not enough. The MBTA must provide all-night service on at least the subway lines in order to fully address the issue.
If Boston truly is to be a world-class city (it certainly is in terms of its educational and cultural institutions), then it deserves a world-class subway system that operates 24 hours a day. Such a system would benefit all the residents of Boston and most definitely the large college population. If even one-tenth of 1 percent of the money currently being spent on the Big Dig were put toward public transportation, then we all would be better off.
