Acquiring cable television for dorms, focusing on safety concerns at home and further revision of the guest policy will be the Student Union’s focus over the final two months, Union president Ethan Clay said during his ‘state of the Union’ address at last night’s weekly Senate meeting.
Clay said he believed Boston University students should have ‘improved access to information resources,’ which he said could be solved with access to cable television.
‘Students should have access to late-breaking news for their safety,’ he said. ‘I believe TV happens to be the best medium.’
Clay said he would be happy if students were allowed a limited number of cable stations. He also said cable is necessary for students in a post-Sept. 11 society, citing the campus atmosphere during and immediately after the attacks.
Clay also discussed how safety at BU during terror alerts is a challenging issue the Union will also be working to improve. He said the Union should be a resource for BU administrators, city officials and the BU community.
Clay also discussed this semester’s updated guest policy, saying the changes made were not the best. He said he wished that the revision process could have involved students.
Clay also said he would accept the criticism of the policy and use them to make further changes.
‘I will be the first person to criticize the current policy,’ Clay said. ‘But I will do so after it has been sufficiently tested and we can prepare further suggestions to improve guest visitation at BU.’
Clay also addressed the search for a university president during his speech. He said he would be releasing the date of when an open forum for students to discuss what they want from a new president.
‘This will be a chance for students to express their interests in the search process for the next president,’ he said.
The forum will occur in the next few weeks and members of the presidential search committee will be on hand to listen to students, Clay said.
Clay also told senators not to allow the upcoming Union e-board elections distract them from working on the Union’s everyday projects.
Clay’s current e-board, which ran as the ‘True’ slate last semester, has said they may run for re-election in the upcoming campaign.
