Even though the FREEP seems to have become a sounding board for the Operation: Over crowd, I have to take issue with Micah Lee’s version of BU’s community outreach and the immature, paternalistic characterization of the South End’s minority residents. In his editorial, Mr. Lee writes “BU’s strategy from the beginning has been to ignore the concerns of the low-income community of color, play them off as silly, uneducated black people who just don’t know the facts, spread misinformation and explicit lies”. First, this is a biased opinion, not a fact unless he actually sat in on BU’s strategy meeting for the lab. Second, this attitude is highly insulting to the intelligence of South End residents, who have attended numerous community meetings and no doubt would not be fooled by such a deceitful strategy. The fact that there’s only been a small handful of opposition to the project, probably less than a hundred people out of thousands in the area, seems to logically indicate that South Enders have dismissed all of the heated anti-biolab rhetoric and are okay with the project. Activism is certainly a good thing, but making up facts and pretending that your movement is much bigger than it actually is does nothing to further your cause. The lab has been debated, met on, and approved by countless agencies over the last two years. Its time to move on.
