The Boston University Student Union unanimously voted last night to appoint Ariel Gold to the Executive Board, where she will serve for the rest of the semester as treasurer, filling the position vacated almost a month ago.
The E-Board recommended Gold to the General Assembly because it was impressed with her “energy, enthusiasm and commitment to student life.” said Union President Brooke Feldman, a College of Arts and Sciences and School of Education junior, at the Photonics Center. The E-Board had nominated Gold for the position late Sunday.
Former Treasurer Caroline Cahill, a College of Communication senior, resigned from her post three weeks ago citing health issues. Union Secretary Erica Homan, a CAS senior, had been assuming treasurer duties, which include sitting in on Allocations Board meetings.
Gold, a University Professors Program junior, will step down from her position as South Campus Residence Hall Association treasurer because of a Union bylaw that prohibits a student from serving in two executive positions, said Union Vice President Mark DiCristofaro.
“I saw this as an opportunity to get involved with the top student group that listens to all student concerns,” Gold told GA members before they voted.
Gold’s experience as the South Campus RHA treasurer will help her in the new position, DiCristofaro said.
“The Executive Board and I are extremely happy with the appointment of Ariel,” the College of Communication junior said. “She’s dedicated, committed. She’s so knowledgeable about BU policy. She’s going to add greatly to the dynamic of the Union.”
Dean of Students Kenneth Elmore proposed at the meeting a new, relaxed Guest Policy that Elmore said he hopes will go into effect for fall 2007. The Allocations Board proposal will be discussed at the next Union meeting.
The GA also passed a resolution that will allow students to reschedule a final exam if they have three exams within a 24-hour period.
“When students have three exams in 24 hours, there’s no way than can prepare and do their best,” said SED sophomore Kyle Getz, who authored the resolution.
Under the previous policy, students could only reschedule one of their exams if they were scheduled with three exams on the same calendar day, Getz said.
Getz said Elmore asked him to obtain support for the resolution, which Getz said he was confident would pass in the GA.
“There’s really no person who doesn’t benefit from it, so I saw it as a win-win,” Getz said after the meeting.
