Dear DFP,
The use of mind-altering substances is probably as old as civilization itself, and it is part of the human experience. Far from supporting the prohibition of drugs, I believe such enterprises as a “war on drugs” only serve to further the interests of organized crime.
However, as individuals we do need to take some responsibility for our behavior. The use of intoxicating and mind-altering substances is something we should not take lightly. People’s identities are formed within a framework of the day-to-day apprehension of reality — the disavowal of which can lead all too easily to personality disintegration.
We’ve all seen examples of this. Distorted perceptions of reality can lead even the most reasonable person to do and say extremely embarrassing and regrettable things (“Support Israel to end violence,” by Michael P Ross, 7 March 2003). So please, everyone — have fun, but try to exercise a bit of caution. My time is a terrible thing to waste.
