Former Seinfeld writers Gregg Kavet and Andy Robin wrote and directed the hilarious independent comedy Live Free Or Die. The story takes place in a small New Hampshire town. Wannabe hoodlum John “Rugged” Rudgate (Aaron Stanford) makes money by selling car stereos he pretends are stolen, stealing quarters from the Children’s Cancer Fund at the convenience store and selling stolen tractor school diplomas he had a teenager steal for him.
Rugged pretends to be a regular “Billy the Kid,” but in reality, he’s a coward who still lives with his mother. The small-time crook runs into an old colleague, the unintelligent Lagrand, brilliantly portrayed by Paul Schneider. The two become companions and partners in crime. Their friendship sparks trouble, as a sequence of comic events and hilarious misunderstandings coincidentally make Rugged into the outlaw he always aspired to be.
The actors in Live Free or Die do an excellent job and Schneider especially steals the show. His performance is reminiscent of a combination of Napoleon Dynamite star Jon Heder and comic genius Will Ferrell.
The film is peppered with witty dialogue that is fast and funny and the plot unfolds in such a humorous and original way that the film feels like a long Saturday Night Live skit.
