Thank you for considering this letter. I’m not aware of the word limits on these, so if it is too long, please let me know so I can trim it down. Thanks! -Stephen Curet, Jr. SMG 05 617-851-1912
This past Thursday evening I arrived at the Arlington T-Stop with College Republicans from across the city to welcome President Bush to Boston. He was here on a fundraising drive and we were there to show our peaceful support. I fully expected us to be outnumbered given that Massachusetts is one of the most liberal states in the U.S., but what I found shocked me. It seemed as if all the wackos, conspiracy theorists, and angry fanatics in the entire state had showed up to cause trouble. The trouble began when one well meaning young man began running along the sidewalk screaming at the top of his lungs that Bush was an international terrorist and killed little children in Iraq. It didn’t strike me as odd until I saw a woman with him holding up a pro-choice sign. Ah, the irony. Then a middle-aged woman approached me and a Bush supporter from Harvard as we were holding up Bush-Cheney 2004 signs. After unsuccessfully trying to convince us that we shouldn’t vote for Bush, she stopped talking and just stood there, staring at me. I turned away from the lady, but several minutes later she was still there with her Vote for Kerry 2004 buttons, staring at my face. I finally asked her what the problem was, and her reply stunned me. “I’m sending rays of love to you so you won’t vote for Bush.” What do you say? A little later, a smallish little guy standing on top of the Arlington t-station started chanting “f*** Bush, f*** Bush”. Part of the crowd joined in, and one Kerry supporter, unable to determine the sex of the little guy yells out “yeah, what she said.” The protestors continued screaming things at Bush supporters and at no one in particular for a few hours. One man started chanting “shoot Bush, shoot Bush”, apparently unaware that this is illegal. He was fortunate that no Secret Service agents heard him, or he would have been hauled away. The most telling moment was when anti-Bush protestors started attacking peaceful Bush supporters in an attempt to take away their signs. So much for free speech. Finally, when this proved unsuccessful, one protestor jumped from the top of the Arlington t-stop and landed on a Bush supporter. Several others joined in and a full fledged street brawl was underway. Fortunately no one was seriously injured, but a different damage had been done. Anti-Bush protestors and Democrats had shown their true colors. They are angry and full of hate. This whole anti-Bush movement is driven by hatred. Though they do exist, individuals who supported Kerry from the beginning are few and far between. Howard Dean was cannibalized by the DNC because of his in-elect ability, and now people are voting for Kerry, not because he is the best candidate, but because they hate Bush. Fortunately for Americans, campaigns aren’t won on hate.
