Voting for the Boston University Student Union executive board and college government slates officially begins today. Students can vote online via the student link.
The voting, which is completely administered online, and will continue for the next two days. Voting officially ends at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Apr. 3. Election results will be released at a 5 p.m. meeting in the Ziskind Lounge that day, according to Student Union Elections Commission Chair Jeanette Jankiewicz.
Jankiewicz said students can access voting straight from their personal computers.
‘There is a link on the main BU webpage, and there is also a webpage from the student link,’ she said.
Last year more than 4,000 students voted in the elections, which was the most in recent years, Jankiewicz said. She said she was unsure of how this year’s election would turn out.
Voting is done via the web to ensure that students cannot vote more than once in the election.
Earlier this year, turmoil arose after the Student Union Senate elections when former Tribunal member Lisa Franchini said she believed the elections were ‘invalid’ because of improper election procedures. She resigned over the issue.
Senate elections were run through pen and paper ballots, however, while Jankiewicz said executive board elections are always electronic. In fact, the computerized process is controlled by a university organization to ensure fairness.
‘University Information systems sets up the webpage,’ Jankiewicz said. ‘When you go to vote you have to type in your user name and Kerberos password once you have already voted you won’t be allowed access into the site.’
To vote in the elections, a student must be an undergraduate student, have a settled student account with no outstanding balance and have a valid BU login and Kerberos password, according to SUEC’s website.
This year’s elections have three contested races, including the battles for the Student Union executive board, and the School of Management and College of General Studies student governments.
The ‘Truant,’ ‘True 2’ and ‘URANUS’ slates are all running for Student Union e-board, while ‘Absolute’ and ‘Just Think’ are running for SMG government and ‘Creating Great Strides’ and ‘Now Iz the Time’ are running in CGS.
This year’s elections were delayed at the beginning, after the ‘True 2’ slate was the only slate to file papers for the election in time. SUEC and the Student Activities Office decided to push back the start of the campaigning until two other slates finally announced their candidacy.
Jankiewicz said SUEC was hoping many students would go out an vote in the elections and the body has been advertising for the start of voting by giving out free pens, stress balls and magnets. She said they are handing the items out at popular locations such as the George Sherman Union.
They had handed out more than 500 stress balls and 500 pens as of yesterday night, she said.
