The big-wigs at Comedy Central must be wetting themselves with joy over the sweet, sweet deal they have with South Park — a show so good, with such a devoted fanbase, that they can release a 15-episode season and charge nearly $50, yet include almost no special features.
South Park: The Complete Seventh Season is like the six season releases that preceed it: chock full of some classic episodes (“Fat Butt and Pancake Head,” “South Park is Gay,” “Casa Bonita”) but lacking in any special features — save for three- to five-minute “mini” commentaries for each episode by creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker. The short-but-amusing commentaries are lacking, but, hey, at least they own up to that, calling them “mini” right on the box.
While extended commentary on a few episodes would have been nice (is it really that hard to do 20 minutes?), Season Seven is well-worth the purchase for the biting social commentary on stem cell research (“Krazy Kripples”), music downloads (“Christian Rock Hard”), metrosexuals (“South Park is Gay”), the Mormon faith (“All About Mormons”) and precocious teen sexuality (“Raisins”), among others. Plus, within the existing commentary, there are plenty of amusing nuggets of information from Stone and Parker, including a claim that J. Lo allegedly fired anyone on her film sets who quoted lines from “Fat Butt and Pancake Head” or “Taco Flavored Kisses.” Just try to snag it off Amazon for $28.96 while you can.
