On a trip to North Carolina last weekend, Boston University’s women’s tennis team suffered a pair of 4-3 losses in back-to-back matches against Davidson College and No. 67 Furman University on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
“This weekend was heartbreaking,” said BU coach Lesley Sheehan. “They were long, hard-fought matches, but we just couldn’t pull them out.”
The Terriers (7-7) won the opening doubles point both days before narrowly losing in singles. Saturday marked BU’s first-ever loss to Davidson, while Sunday represented the inaugural meeting between the Paladins and Terriers.
“We went into both matches, started off strong and played very good doubles,” Sheehan said. “It was our highlight of the weekend. But we’ll be working on some singles going into our next match.”
Four different players picked up victories over the weekend, including junior Francine Whu and sophomore Liz Corrao on Saturday, and juniors Danielle Abraham and Cori Lefkowith on Sunday.
BU has three matches remaining on its regular season schedule, starting tomorrow against Boston College at Nickerson Outdoor Courts.
“We usually play BC really close. Last year we lost 4-3 to them,” Sheehan said. “It will be a test. We expect that it’s going to be a tough match, but we know exactly what we need to work on.
“One of the main things is that we were setting up points really well, but just not finishing well and making easy mistakes. Hopefully we’ll come out on top this time.”
Following BC are matches against Quinnipiac University (April 12) and the University of Massachusetts-Amherst (April 15).
Sheehan said her team must remain focused over the next few weeks.
“They’re really very self-motivated. They know exactly what they want to do,” Sheehan said. “We talk about what our goals are for each upcoming week, and I do a lot of talking with each individual about their own game. They’re constantly trying to improve.
“We’ll take one match at a time,” she added. “All three are good, solid teams and we just want to play really good tennis. Our goal is to win America East again and go to the NCAA Tournament. That’s where we’re at right now.”
